This article is intended for administrators wishing to understand the witness requirements of StorMagic SvSAN and compare it to other technologies.
StorMagic SvSAN Witness Requirements Comparison
Expand the sections below to review StorMagic SvSAN witness requirements, VMware vSAN witness requirements, and scaling considerations.
StorMagic SvSAN 2-node Witness Requirements
- 1:1000 sharable
- 1x vCPU
- 1GB RAM
- 1GB VMDK, 2x 512MB
- 3000ms latency
- 9Kbps per mirror

VMware vSAN 2-node Witness Requirements
- 1:64 maximum sharable
- 6x vCPUs
- 32GB RAM
- 1.05TB total storage
- 1x 12GB VMDK
- 1x 10GB VMDK
- 3x 350GB VMDK
- <500ms latency
- 1.5Mbps per site

Scalability Comparison
1.5Mbps * 64 sites = 96Mbps from the main datacenter hosting the witness. This location will presumably be hosting other services such as websites, backup, etc., and have just lost approximately 100Mbps to vSAN.
9Kbps * 1000 sites = 9Mbps.
Using an existing StorMagic gas station use case as an example, they have 2166 node license keys = 1,083 sites at 2 nodes per site.
So working with 1000 sites for a round number:
| Requirement | StorMagic SvSAN | VMware vSAN |
|---|---|---|
| Number of Witness | 1 | 15.6 |
| vCPUs | 1 | 96 (16x 6) |
| Memory | 1 | 512 (16x32) |
| Storage | 1GB | 16.8TB (16x 1.05TB) |
| Latency | <3000ms | <500ms |
| Total Bandwidth | 9Mbps (1000x 9Kbps) | 1.536Mbps (16x 96Mbps) |
